Our Reading Bolck

The first hour of our day is taken up with the Reading Block, and what amazing progress we have all made with our reading over this first term at school.

You will remember how we just had the fold up books for the first few weeks, as seen here with Maddie and Aniston.

Mia and Kaitlyn are doing their finger exercises as they colour in their favorite page in their books.

Jasmine and Zara clearly show you how they have highlighted their focus words for the day.

Here we see Shayla and Cooper getting on with their reading tasks too.

Hayden and Ashton.
Once the children started to build a bank of know words, and they understood how these early reader worked, they started to bring home their individual little readers.

Ethan and Jaxon.
Every child chooses their own reader each day.

Gracie.
They flip through the book, looking at the pictures so that they have a good idea of what may be happening in the book before they need to read it to an adult in the room.

Ryan and Max.
The little fold up books still come home on occasion as new words are introduced.

Kayden and Tane.
The words that we have been working on are also starting to come home.

We also have 'small groups' as part of the reading block.  During these sessions the children play games that revise and consolidate their literacy learning.

Here Jai, Maddie, Kaitlyn, Kayden and Archer are playing memory with the words that we have been learning.

Gracie, Jasmine, Hayden and Tane are playing a picture / sound matching game where they are tuning into beginning sounds in words.

Zara, Aniston, Jaxon, Max and Ethan are playing 'Letter Hop' where they are once again tuning into those beginning sounds in words.

The skill of being able to hear those beginning sounds is very important in getting beginning readers and writers ready to take off in their learning.  To help them at home with this activity, games such as 'I spy with my little eye' is a great help.

Ask your child what other games and activities they enjoy doing during small group work.

We have all made so much progress in this first term, that you must all be as proud of their wonderful achievements as I am.
