Our Maths Block

We also add our Maths Block to our very busy days. Most of our Maths learning is done through games. Ask your children what Maths games they have played, and which games they enjoy playing the most.

In this game Kayden and Cooper had to count then circle the number for different collections of pictures.

Katie is another of our amazing volunteers.  Here she is working with Mia, Gracie and Aniston.

Mr Krake is guiding this team of players.

In this game Max and Archer are learning to follow the rules in this game of 'Clowns', where they throw the dice and count out the correct number of counters to cover their clown's balls.

Our theme this term has been 'Traditional Tales', so I made many of the Maths Games to reflect this focus.
Here Ryan, Maddie and Archer are playing a dice game.

Tane and Jasmine throw the dice, read the number and take the correct number of jumps to race to the end of the game.

Following the rules and taking turns plays a big part in these early games.

Mr Krake works with Jaxon, Shayla and Zara.

Kaitlyn and Cooper are very co-operative players.

It is important to look at what your partner is doing, as Max shows us while waiting for Mia to have her turn.

Here's Aniston and Gracie working well together.

Kayden and Hayden show great team work as they play together.

Katie is here working with Tane and Jasmine.

We have also been looking at length in Maths.

We made towers of different heights and lengths.

Then we compared the towers to decide which ones were taller or shorter.

Finally we ordered our towers from shortest to tallest.

We have been learning subatizing.  This is where we are learning to quickly recognize how many dots are on a card.

We are getting really skilled at this, some can even recognize up to 10 dots on a card!

Another area that we have been looking at is patterns.

We have become quite skilled in recognizing a pattern, and then carrying that pattern on.

Another skill that we are developing is assisted by the 'Finger Counting Game'.

The children have to count the fingers and match them to the correct number card.

This game makes the children aware of the many different ways of making a number.
For example 1 finger and 5 fingers makes 6, or 2 fingers and 4 fingers makes 6, and even 3 fingers and 3 fingers still makes 6!  This can be very exciting when you first discover this.

Back in measuring we used the unifix blocks to measure the length and breadth of a book.

We painted our faces on a plate.

We will measure our length with a streamer, and then attach it to our faces.

We used pegs to measure our tables,

and the bookshelves too.

We had great fun with our measuring.

We even used whiteboard markers to measure.

We had to be very careful to make sure that whatever we used to measure with, we had to have them straight and touching.
